    I find setting up this particular Stanley plane to be frustrating because the two blades are separate. You need to get them positioned laterally and to depth and they can even twist a little. This is probably what is lurking behind Bill's comment that one needs to tweak these joints. Meanwhile, there are just two little knurly knobs and they seem to let go when you least want them to. I've had in the back of my mind simply making a new blade that is all one piece. That may not work, though, because quite a long slot would be needed and I wonder if it might not stay planar during heat treating. I rarely have needed a T&G, so have just ignored the whole thing so far. 🙂 If there is a trick to setting this plane without frustration, I'd love to hear it.

    I’m really enjoying this videos series! Bill’s comment on putting the bead on the tongue side was truly what we call “educating our intuition” where we intuitively know something, and are then given the theory for that intuition.

    I feel kinda smart now, I came up with that idea of the board with two dowels to span across two dogholes independently from this. Obviously not saying I know as much as you, but it's good to know my brain is kind of in the right place.

    Folks may want to know that the extension table will not fold down all the way if you have the Industrial base. Because of that, you can not move your fence across the table thus limiting the use of the saw without raising the outfeed table. The tubing protrudes up far enough to interfere with the fence movement unless it is fully 90-degrees with the saw top.

  • @bw162
    @bw162 9 днів тому

    Great video. I am surprised that the width of the solid portion of the outfeed is so narrow. Have you had many occasions when your cut falls between the rails? Not an issue for large sheets but I frequently am pushing a narrow cut off the table with a push stick that would appear to go between the rails. It looks like you could fill the void with a dimensional piece of wood and screw it to the tubular extensions that run parallel to the table. That alone tends to make me opt for building my own.

    Watching people waving their hands that close to a jointed blade is exactly how people lose their fingers. 2:43. Fingers easily can slip right underneath that guard. Use the jointer with push blocks, remove the work piece and walk away. Don't do video demonstrations on top of the machine while it's running, even when it's powering down the blade is still running. Lots of Woodworkers with no fingers have made the same mistake, they shut the machine off, the blade is still running and they go to grab the end on the board closest to the cutter and stick their fingers right in the cutter blade knowing that they've shut the machine off.

    6:40 the early Stanley 71 was designed almost identical to the later 71 1/2 with the closed throat. It's interesting that they took the 71 and modified it but then had the 71 1/2 look like the early 71. Why not call the open throated version the 71 1/2 instead? Anyhow
